Whirl wind of travel

Friday, December 12th, 2008

I’m sorry that I haven’t posted anything in the past few weeks. I’ve been travelling up a storm and entertaining guests.

I’m on a plane back from Bali right now. Bali was awesome. I took some surfing lessons with Sri and managed to stand up a few times. It helps when you have a personal instructor. Ubud was great as well. It’s remarkable how much artwork and hand craft there is there. Every other store was a studio or gallery. There were a few strange things about Bali though. Actually, it’s more likely a strange thing about Indonesia than Bali in particular. Indonesia was the first place that I had to pay to leave the country. I can understand an entrance Visa fee. But to have to pay an entrance AND an exit fee? Weird.

Last weekend I was in Sapa and Hanoi with the Zobrists. Sapa is a place of great beauty. Driving through the hillsides filled with rice paddies and tropical vegitation makes you want to pull your camera out at every bend. But, at the same time, I’ve never seen so much poverty. The Mong people live in this region of Vietnam. They are one of the ethnic minorities in this region. It was heart breaking to see little girls between the ages of 4 and 6 out on the streets at 11PM. The weather was nearing snow season and they were strolling the streets selling little hand made bracelets for .05c to all the tourists. All the while they are walking the cobble stone roads barefoot because they don’t have enough money for shoes or a place to sleep other than the steps of the church or a closed doorway. We all bought as much as we could. I’ve got at least 20 or so bracelets. Truely heart wrenching.

On top of all the travelling, I’ve had a number of guests come visit. Namely, Sri and my cousin Joanna. I’m not sure how I survived it, or Sri for that matter, but we were out till 4-5AM every night he was here. We even had multiple thanksgiving dinners! Pretty awesome.

Which leads me to next weekend. I’ll be heading home!!! I leave for the US on the 19th and don’t get back till the 4th. Completely awesome. We’re going to be in SF, LA, SD, and Las Vegas. I’ll be taking two Singaporean friends with me and showing them the best time possible. 😉
