AUGH!!!!

Last night I had some major insomnia. It was difficult for me to sleep because I was stressing about cleaning the mold all around my house. So after tossing and turning all night long I decided to wake up and fix myself a bowl of cereal at 3AM. I polished off the last of my box of cereal and tossed the empty bag into my trash can.

That was a fatal mistake. I woke up to ants swarming all overĀ  the empty bag and finding that my cutting board had mold all over it. Totally gross. But the ants here are much smarter than the ants back home. When I disturbed the bag, it immediately started a shock wave through their trail. Their warning system went into effect and, within 30 secs the line was dissolved and only a few stragglers were left behind, lost. I’ve placed bait around my house now. The ant bait here is a slow working one. Apparently, the queens here have other ants sample food first and then wait a few days to see if they die before ingesting any themselves. Smart buggers… Hopefully that will be it for them.

As for the mold, I’m hiring a mold specialist to come to my apartment today. And then, I’m buying an industrial strength dehumidifier. I’m prepared to spend $300-$500 on one. I’m just too frustrated and pissed off.

I’ve found that Singapore is a place that you can’t half ass anything. There is no cheating the system. No shortcuts. No fucking around. I chose my apartment because it was on a high level and was very breezy with the windows and doors open. I figured I could save a ton of money on electricity bills by keeping my windows open and not using the Air Conditioner. Most people’s electricity bills are around $400 a month here. Pretty astronomical, considering I was coming from LA where my bill was less than $30 a month. As an added benefit, I thought being so high up, I wouldn’t be bothered by mosquitoes or other insects. Well all those preconceived notions have been thrown out the door.

You see, there is an added benefit of closing your windows and doors and running the AC. It removes the humidity from the air. The very humidity that is fueling the growth of mold in my apartment. So, after two months, I am now going to close my windows and doors. I’m going to invest in an industrial Dehumidifier. And, I’m going to probably buy an additional AC unit. I’m going to get rid of my garbage cans and throw garbage out as soon as I have any. I have to clean my dishes as soon as I use any. I also have to dry my clothes as soon as I’m done washing them.

It’s trial by fire out here and I’ve been getting burned.
